When a brand-new luxury all-inclusive opens in the Mexican Caribbean, my priority is getting boots on the ground or rather, feet in the sand. As a travel advisor specializing in Mexico and Caribbean escapes, I’ve booked numerous clients at Secrets Playa Blanca Costa Mujeres since its debut.
While I didn’t sleep overnight on this visit, I spent extensive time on-site conducting a professional resort inspection-walking the grounds, inspecting multiple room categories, checking out the spa and pool vibes, and assessing the beach conditions.
Here is my candid professional review, along with who will love it (and who might want to look elsewhere).
Secrets Playa Blanca Costa Mujeres is a modern, design-forward adults-only sanctuary that excels in understated luxury, expansive pools, and a calmer, secluded coastal setting. It is ideal for couples, honeymooners, and friend getaways wanting upscale dining and relaxation roughly 30–40 minutes north of the Cancun Hotel Zone bustle.
Location & First Impressions
Located in Costa Mujeres, roughly 35 minutes north of Cancun International Airport (CUN), the resort feels worlds away from the party-heavy Hotel Zone. The design leans heavily into natural organic materials: local stone, warm neutral woods, handcrafted textiles, and native tropical landscaping. It feels serene, high-end, and contemporary rather than flashy.
The Accommodations: Standard vs. Preferred Club
Secrets Playa Blanca has 550 suites and they are all smoke-free. Even entry-level suites are spacious, featuring deep soaking tubs, separate rain showers, private balconies or terraces, and Secrets’ signature discreet 24-hour room service delivery box.
- Swim-Out Suites: If you love direct pool access, the swim-outs here are well-designed with comfortable submerged loungers.
- Is Preferred Club Worth It? Yes, particularly here. The Preferred Club lounge offers elevated top-shelf spirits and dedicated concierge service, but the real clincher is the dedicated pool areas and prime oceanfront suite locations. If your budget permits, book the Preferred Club Junior Suite Ocean Front.
The Beach & Pool Landscape
Costa Mujeres is famous for its wide, white-sand coastline protected by Isla Mujeres offshore, which typically means calmer water compared to the open ocean sides of Cancun.
- The Beach: The beach footprint at Playa Blanca is expansive. It offers plenty of room between loungers, so you never feel stacked on top of other guests.
- The Pools: The pool design is a standout feature. There is a multi-tier central pool complex including a lively infinity pool overlooking the ocean, along with more tranquil, tucked-away water spaces when you want silence with a book.
Dining at Secrets Playa Blanca
Secrets Playa Blanca offers nine dining options including six à la carte gourmet restaurants, a buffet, a café and a grill. No reservations are required or accepted. They offer 24-hour room service.
Gluten-free and vegetarian menu options are available. All restaurant openings rotate throughout the week. Number of restaurants and bars open for each meal is dependent upon occupancy levels.
Bordeaux (French): The most formal, romantic setting on property. It features vaulted ceilings, dim romantic lighting, and classic French bistro-style dishes paired with an impressive international wine cellar. (Dress code: Casual Elegance).
El Patio (Authentic Mexican): A must-visit. Instead of standard Americanized tacos, the menu focuses on authentic regional Mexican gastronomy. It also features an intimate tequila and mezcal cellar where guests can book private tastings.
Himitsu (Pan-Asian & Teppanyaki): Features a dedicated sushi bar, Japanese tatami-style seating sections, and interactive Teppanyaki show cooking tables. Reservations for the Teppanyaki are required.
Portofino (Italian): Designed with rustic timbers and Tuscan farmhouse textures, serving homemade pastas, seafood, and classic regional Italian specialties.
Oceana (Fresh Coastal Seafood): An airy, open-air venue right by the water serving fresh catches and grilled seafood for both lunch and dinner.
Secrets Playa Blanca Spa
A quick walkthrough of the Secrets Spa confirms Hyatt’s reputation for wellness facilities. The hydrotherapy circuit is extensive—featuring cold plunge pools, steam rooms, saunas, and hydro-massage jets. For my honeymoon and anniversary clients, booking a treatment here is a non-negotiable recommendation.

It is approximately 25 miles (40 km) north of Cancun International Airport (CUN). Typical private transfer times range from 35 to 45 minutes, depending on traffic through downtown Cancun.
Does Secrets Playa Blanca have seaweed (sargassum)?
Because Isla Mujeres sits directly off the coast, Costa Mujeres often experiences calmer water and less sargassum accumulation than parts of the Riviera Maya. However, ocean conditions fluctuate seasonally throughout the Caribbean.
Do you need reservations at the restaurants?
No. Consistent with the Secrets Unlimited-Luxury concept, dining across the à la carte specialty restaurants does not require advance reservations. You will need a reservation if you want to eat at the Teppanyaki table.
