A Day in Florence, Italy

If Italy is even remotely on your radar for 2026, Florence is one city that absolutely belongs on your itinerary.

Florence is compact, walkable, endlessly charming, and packed with more art and architecture than your high school textbooks ever gave it credit for.

And the best part? Florence doesn’t require a complicated plan to enjoy. You don’t need a jam-packed itinerary or a color-coded Google Doc to fall in love with this place.

In fact, even without a plan, you can wander, sip, browse, and stumble into something beautiful at every turn.

Even one well-planned day feels unforgettable….but I recommend lingering in Florence for at least a few days if you can.

Here’s what a perfect day in the Cradle of the Renaissance looks like.

How to Spend a Day in Florence, Italy

In the Morning

Start your day early, when Florence is still stretching awake. Grab a cappuccino and pastry from a neighborhood café (standing at the counter is the local way). Then wander toward Piazza della Signoria, one of the city’s most iconic squares.

With fewer crowds in the morning, you can actually see the statues, fountains, and Renaissance architecture before the city fills in. Continue through the Uffizi courtyard as artists begin setting up their stalls, then head down to the Arno River for your first glimpse of Ponte Vecchio glowing in the early light.

Midday

Cross Ponte Vecchio as the shops open, then keep going into the Oltrarno, Florence’s artisan quarter filled with leather studios, small boutiques, and quieter streets that feel wonderfully local.

Stop for lunch at a classic trattoria (the kind with a handwritten menu and just a few tables). Expect generous pasta and local wine.

After lunch, head to the Boboli Gardens (tickets required!) for panoramic views, shady pathways, and a moment of calm away from the crowds. If you’re in the mood for a little shopping afterward, the surrounding streets are ideal for picking up handmade leather goods and small artisan pieces.

Late Afternoon

Late afternoon is prime gelato time (and Florence takes gelato seriously). Follow it with a stroll along the Arno, soaking in the river views and the slower rhythm of the late day.

If you want a uniquely Florentine moment, stop at a buchetta del vino- one of the city’s historic wine windows for a small pour.

As golden hour settles in, head to a rooftop bar for a spritz and a view of Brunelleschi’s dome glowing above the terracotta rooftops.

In the Evening

Finish your day with dinner at a cozy osteria. No matter how full you are, there’s always room for post-dinner gelato on your walk back through the historic center. (We won’t judge if you make two stops in one day!)

If you can swing it, end your night in front of the Duomo. Seeing it illuminated against the night sky is one of those simple, beautiful moments that stays with you long after the trip ends.

Whether Florence is the highlight of your trip or just one stop within your bigger Italy itinerary, having the right plan makes all the difference. From pacing and routing to guides, dining, and the little details that make a trip feel effortless, that’s where I come in.
