Adult-only resorts are not cookie-cutter; not every hotel is a great fit for all travelers. Helping my clients choose the best adult-only all-inclusive resort that fits their personality is a big part of my job. Hopefully, this post will help you understand what type of resort is best for you.
Not all adult-only resorts are the same, I’ll break down a few differences.
- Party vibe, but not clothing optional (this is a different category)
- Quiet and romantic
- A mix of quiet with some entertainment and activities
- There are some clothing-optional hotels in the Cancun area and Jamaica mostly
Some questions to consider:
- Do you like music and activities at the pool?
- Do you prefer a quiet pool area?
- Would you like to be able to reserve a cabana?
- How do you feel about nightlife? Do you want lobby music or a disco?
- Is the spa important to you?
- Would you like a romantic dinner on the beach?
Resorts with a Party Vibe
Some adult-only resorts have a party vibe, with music and maybe even a DJ by the pool. They also tend to have party pools and discos for nighttime entertainment. There is a range of pricing in this category as well.
Breathless Resorts: Breathless currently has resorts in Mexico, the Dominican, and Jamaica. They have a party pool with a DJ but they also have some quiet areas. The Xhale Club upgrade for Cancun includes the quiet rooftop pool. You can get the best of both worlds here.
Royalton Chic: The Chic brand is in Cancun, the Dominican and a brand new location in Antigua. Their upgrade is called Diamond Club and it has additional amenities. The Cancun location includes the rooftop pool and club with the upgrade.
Resorts that are more on the quiet, relaxing side
Live Aqua: I love almost everything about this hotel but sometimes it’s almost too quiet. If you made me pick something bad that would be it so there’s not much wrong with this one. They have a location in Cancun and the Dominican.
El Dorado Casitas: I don’t even care that this hotel is quiet. It’s my favorite room at any hotel we’ve stayed in. They have private pool swim-out rooms on the ground floor. The Casitas section is quiet but they have the Royale section next door if you need activities and music. This hotel is also fairly large, they also offer golf cart pick-up.
Resorts that are a good mix of quiet with activities
I do like a good mix. My favorite resorts have quiet areas during the day with some music and a good show at night. Lobby bars with music are also a great place to hang out at night.
Secrets Moxche Playa del Carmen: This particular Secrets Resort is in Playa and is fairly new. I stayed here over Christmas. You can find that review here. I like this hotel, it hits a lot of my requests. The swim-up was a private pool, lots of quiet pool areas but the one by the beach is hoppin’ with activities. At night they have shows and then the disco opens.
Valentin Imperial Maya is another one of my favorites, but it’s a big property. If you don’t like walking you may want to reconsider this one. There are quiet areas during the day but the main pool is usually busy and the entertainment team keeps things lively. At night they have music playing in the courtyard near the restaurants and the entertainment team has a show. My review of Valentin is here.
Haven Riviera Cancun is another great one for this category. I loved the nightly entertainment and the quiet pool during the day. We had the best oceanfront view from our ground-floor swim-out. You can read about Haven here.
Clothing-optional resorts
I have not visited any of the resorts in this category but sometimes I get requests for one of these hotels. There’s one in Cancun that is topless at one of the pools, not clothing optional, called Temptation. There are a few south of Cancun that are clothing optional and a few in Jamaica that have an au-natural beach and/or pool areas. If this interests you, don’t be afraid to ask me!
